Champlitte

The commune of Champlitte is a town of 1750 inhabitants. It has the particularity of having 6 associated communes: Neuvelle-les-Champlitte, Margilley, Champlitte-la-Ville, Montarlot-les-Champlitte and Leffond since 1972 and Frettes in 1974.
This large municipality of 12,933 hectares, classified as a tourist municipality, has been awarded the Station Verte label and is twinned with San Rafael and Jicaltepec in Mexico.
Champlitte is located on the Via Francigena, of which it is a reference town for France. The Via Francigena, GR®145 in France, is a Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe since 1994. The 2,200 km long route starts in Canterbury, England, then crosses France via Calais, Reims, Besançon, Ornans, Pontarlier, Switzerland and Italy to end in St Peter’s Square in Rome. This route of shared identity, European heritage and intercultural dialogue links the peoples of Northern and Southern Europe and is a real asset for all the territories it crosses.
Champlitte has a rich historical and architectural heritage that the town has preserved over the centuries. The 16th and 18th century castle, classified as a historical monument in 1909, houses a Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, which has been awarded the Musée de France and Pôle Ethnologique label. Together with the Museum of Arts and Techniques, they offer an insight into rural society and highlight the technical changes that took place at the end of the 19th century.
The church of Saint Christophe, listed as a World Heritage site, still has its 1437 belfry. The churches of the associated communes all have their own particularities: Champlitte-la-Ville and its 11th century church, Montarlot and its troubadour style church, Frettes with its empire bell tower and its choir fresco, etc.
The environmental landscape heritage is remarkable: the dry grasslands classified as Natura 2000 spread throughout the commune, the marked dry stone path with its clos, cabordes, écoyeux and murgets, recalls the flourishing winegrowing era of the village.
Today, the wine production of 2 vineyards of about forty hectares, by its quality wines, carries the colours of the village well beyond its territory. The town offers a full range of accommodation and catering facilities: hotels and restaurants, camping, group accommodation, pilgrimage facilities, etc.
The vineyards, forests, fishing, hunting and the many signposted walks, bike rides and horse rides allow everyone to discover the treasures offered by the surrounding area.
