Maîche

The castle of Maîche was built following the destruction of the old castle by the troops of the bishop of Basel in 1470. It took almost 30 years for this fortified house to be achieved. The studded gate is the last vestige of the old fortress, contrasting with its Renaissance staircase. The lintel indicates 1524. The Guyot family, owners of the castle and whose last governor of the fortress had the medieval gateway affixed, died out in 1824 and passed on the castle and its lands to a niece who married a Belgian, the ancestor of the current owners. The castle was listed as a Historical Monument in 1957. During the last war, in November 1944, Churchill and De Gaulle met there, in order to liberate Alsace. And one of the charms of this house is the large lounge on the first floor, which goes from the courtyard side to the garden side : it houses the very yellow armchairs on which the two great men sat. This magnificent room of over 100m2 is decorated with panoramic wallpapers from the Zuber factory in Rixheim. The French gardens with their balustrades, sculptures, fire pots and Medicis vases were created by Mademoiselle de La Touche, Marquise de Maîche, on her return from Versailles. This house is both in the centre of Maîche and set back, but it is, by our wish, widely open to visitors and art lovers.
